Calling all writers!

OPL is here to help you hone your writing skills and get those words to paper. Whether you are seeking a writing community or just some guidance on how to improve your skills, OPL has the  resources you need to craft a story you will want to share.

Meet other writers

OPL branches across Ottawa offer writing workshops for writers to meet, write together and get constructive feedback. Some groups provide space and time to write alongside other writers, while others focus on critiquing writing  you bring to the group.  To find a branch near you that offers a writing group, check out the Programs and events page.

Take a writing class

LinkedIn Learning for Libraries and Toutapprendre (in French) offers courses for writers. Learn the foundations of fiction, the ins and outs of grammar, and proofreading skills useful to improve your creative writing.

OPL offers The Great Courses on Kanopy, on Hoopla and as part of its DVD collection. Follow a class offered by experts to create an engaging story and to improve your fiction writing. To view The Great Courses DVDs in the collection, check out the catalogue. To stream the courses, log onto Kanopy or Hoopla to view their full catalogue.

Access writing technology

OPL branches offer access to desktop computers in branch and Chromebook computers in branch and to borrow. Computers are equipped with word processing software like Word.

  • To book a desktop workstation for two hours, check out the Computer workstation page.
  • To see which branches have Chromebook devices available for long-term use, see the Chromebook’s page. Please note that these devices are available on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved.
