Closer to You With Bookmobiles!

Did you know that libraries don’t just live in buildings? They’ve got wheels too! Across Canada and the U.S., we’re celebrating National Library Outreach Day (formerly known as National Bookmobile Day) — a special day that shines a spotlight on all the creative ways libraries reach out to serve rural and underserved communities. And at the heart of it all? The trusty bookmobile!

So… What is a Bookmobile, Anyway?

Imagine your local library… but on wheels! A bookmobile (a.k.a. mobile library, library on wheels, or even the charmingly old-school “book-auto”) is a vehicle loaded with books, movies, and more — all ready to bring library love straight to your neighborhood.

These rolling libraries have been cruising around Canada since the 1930s, thanks to a boost from the Carnegie Corporation. Their first mission? Deliver books to 44,000 eager readers in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. From there, they hit the road across the country, spreading stories and smiles.
