Elizabeth, a regular at the Beaverbrook branch, turns often to the Library’s collections and borrows DVDs to enjoy the stories from her youth when she doesn’t like what she finds on TV.

“My husband lost his eyesight as he got older” shares Elizabeth sitting comfortably in her wheelchair as an OPL staff member assists her. “He was able to borrow readers at the Library and enjoy audiobooks.”

Clients like Elizabeth remind us what accessibility in action can mean.

At OPL, Everyone Belongs

For this year’s National Accessibility Week, running from May 31 to June 6, OPL’s commitment to providing accessible and welcoming spaces, services, and programs, is more visible than ever, ensuring everyone feels supported, included and empowered.

From accessible collections, to assistive technology, OPL offers a variety of ways to help people with disabilities of various ages and interests access the Library’s materials.

OPL’s Home Services also extend accessibility to the Library’s services to community members who are unable to visit the library due to a disability by providing free monthly delivery of library materials directly to their homes.

In our branches, employees are always eager to assist clients in accessing library services and provide accommodation when needed. Don’t hesitate to reach out them or to fill the accessible services request form if you need specific accommodations.

Accessibility in Action

Earlier this year, OPL installed countertop hearing loops at the Stittsville and Nepean Centrepointe branches, to reduce barriers for community members who are D/deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing. If you, or a family member, have used this device at the Library, please share your feedback with us by completing this survey.
