It’s that time of year again — backpacks are packed, school routines are returning, and families are looking for activities that spark joy and connection. As of September, several Ottawa Public Library (OPL) branches will offer Sensory Storytime, a lower-stimulus program for children aged 6 months to 6 years old— timed perfectly with the back-to-school season.
What is Sensory Storytime?
Sensory Storytime is a free, monthly program at select OPL branches for children who are neurodiverse or who need extra support — including autism, ADHD, developmental delays, sensory sensitivities or other diagnosed or undiagnosed difficulties. It offers a welcoming, predictable space where families can enjoy stories, songs, and play at a gentler pace.
A Family’s Experience
For Lucas, a first grader with autism, who loves soccer, LEGO, and anything with wheels, this program was a game changer. “When I heard about Sensory Storytime, I knew it was created with kids like Lucas in mind — kids who need a little more flexibility and understanding,” explained Lucas’ mom. Sessions are intentionally smaller than typical storytimes to create a calmer, more flexible environment. Sensory toys — from squishy to textured — are available, and children are free to join in activities or simply explore the space. Visual schedules and tactile supports help make the session predictable and comfortable for everyone.
“Right from the start, we felt welcomed. The space was calm, inviting, and thoughtfully set up. There were visual schedules, sensory toys, and lots of room to move around. Lucas could just be himself, and that made the experience feel safe and positive — for both of us.”
One standout moment came when Lucas spotted the giant peanut exercise ball: “His whole face lit up. He ran right over, laughing and playing alongside the other kids. It was such a joyful moment — a reminder of how powerful it is when a space feels safe and welcoming.”
For many families, traditional storytimes can be overwhelming. Sensory Storytime at OPL offers a gentler rhythm so parents and caregivers can relax, meet others, and watch their child explore at their own pace.
“During the session, I felt a sense of calm and relief knowing he was in a space that truly understands and supports him,” Lucas’s mom said. “Afterward, there’s this feeling of gratitude, grateful for the program, the staff, and the community it creates. It’s a relief to know there’s a program that truly understands our children.”
