Readers young and old are invited to become part of literary history this summer as Ottawa Public Library partners with the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) to launch Ottawa's first Children's Book Parade.
On Saturday August 8, families are encouraged to dress up as their favourite children's book characters and gather at Sunnyside Branch for an afternoon celebrating stories, creativity and community.
"How often do you get to dress up as your favourite book character, make some noise with a handmade shaker, enjoy a musical performance, march in a parade celebrating books, and journey to a picnic full of fun activities with Canadian authors and illustrators? We're excited to invite families to be part of Ottawa's very first Children's Book Parade & Picnic, where they will share the joy of storytelling together and make memories that will last a lifetime!" said Jennifer, Program Developer at OPL.
The festivities begin at 12:30 pm, with a free drop-in craft session where children can create colourful posters and musical shakers using supplies provided by OPL. Families will also enjoy musical entertainment by performer Luciano Lu as they prepare for the parade.
At 1:30 pm, the parade will depart from Sunnyside Branch and make its way to Lansdowne's Horticulture Building for the IBBY Picnic & Parade. There, families can enjoy a free celebration of children's books featuring author visits, storytelling, reading circles, book activities, the OPL Bookmobile and more.
Featured guests include beloved author and illustrator Barbara Reid, alongside Nancy Cooper, Jack Wong and Erin Bow.
The event is part of the 40th IBBY World Congress, which brings together authors, illustrators, publishers, librarians and literacy advocates from around the world to celebrate children's literature.
