In today’s fast-paced digital world, media literacy is more important than ever. From teens scrolling through social media to older adults reading online news, everyone faces the challenge of distinguishing fact from fiction. With the rise of AI-generated content and deepfakes, knowing how to critically evaluate media is a vital skill for all ages.

That’s why Ottawa Public Library is proud to participate in Media Literacy Week, a national initiative led by MediaSmarts. This annual campaign promotes digital and media literacy across Canada, helping individuals become more informed and empowered media users.

🧠 What is Media Literacy?

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms. It’s about asking the right questions, recognizing bias, and understanding how media shapes our perceptions of the world.

  • Whether you're a student, a parent, or a senior, media literacy helps you:
  • Spot misinformation and disinformation
  • Understand how algorithms influence what you see online
  • Protect your privacy and digital identity
  • Engage responsibly with content and communities

Learn, Engage, Empower

This fall, OPL is hosting a series of in-person and virtual workshops across the city to promote media literacy for all ages. These sessions are designed to be interactive, practical, and accessible — whether you're just starting out or looking to deepen your understanding.

🤝 In Partnership with MediaSmarts and Connected Canadians

We’re thrilled to be working with MediaSmarts and Connected Canadians to bring expert-led programming to our community. Their resources and guidance will help participants build the skills they need to navigate today’s complex media landscape.
